How can we improve Simkl?

  1. Set release date as default

    Could you please add a setting in Simkl to set the release date as the default? I’m coming from Trakt, which have an option to set the release date as default, but I couldn’t find this setting in Simkl. I can only set the release date by going into the details of a show.

  2. Header / navigation bar order

    Something that always frustrates me with Simkl's layout.

    This is present across the website, app, and profiles. The ordering of the types of media don't really make logical sense.

    The order is currently: TV -> Anime -> Movies

    Movies and TV are both formats and dictate how content is consumed and have the widest appeal. Both are more linked to "people" than "animation."

    Movies are the largest requiring more of a commitment for a sitting (larger format).

    TV shows are episode chunks (smaller format).

    Anime isn't really a format, but a style. A very popular style, which doesn't fit neatly…

    You can now change the Navigation order for TV\Anime\Movies menus on Simkl to Movies\TV\Anime in your Settings > Lists Defaults https://simkl.com/settings/

  4. Sort lists by random

    Add a sort option to lists to sort randomly, just like Trakt allows.

  5. Option to add a missing serie, anime or movie

    Some series are missing, cannot be found by search, even though they are known on moviedb, IMDB, or seriesdb

  6. Previously watched movies/TV

    I have watched thousands of movies and shows over the years. At the moment when I mark something as watched it shows the date watched as the date I marked it I believe. Could we have a generic "watched in the past but date not known" type entry to allow for this situation? Going forwards I am marking shows as I watch them of course. Many thanks.

  7. Option for Episode Number Formatting

    Hello SIMKL Team,

    I’d like to request a feature for the Calendar and other views that display TV episode numbers. Currently, episodes show in the format “S:01 – Ep:01”. Would it be possible to add an option for users to choose the compact style “S01E01” instead?

    This would make it easier to line up with common naming conventions used in media libraries (e.g., Plex, Sonarr, Radarr, etc.) and improve readability.

  8. Improve search abilities for languages

    When searching for anime it would be helpful for people to be able to chose if they want to search for English dubbed anime or subtitled anime.

  9. Add option to mark Episodes/Season watched before US airdate.

    There are shows around the world that air long before the US does.

    For example https://simkl.com/tv/1384852/family-law aired season 3 in jan 2024 in canada and a couple months after that in the UK. i have watched the whole season but i can't set it as watched as it is only now (2025) airing in the US.

    It also means i can't filter it out of my watchlist when i click "hide watched".

    This happens with a lot of shows from around the world.

    You can set episodes that have not yet been broadcasted directly inside the episodes themselves. On the desktop version in tv show summary we show the next date when it will broadcast, but you can still go into the episode itself to mark it as watched.

  10. Make simkl open-source on Github

    Making Simkl open-source on GitHub would provide a new opportunity for developers to enhance the platform more efficiently through pull requests. Simkl has some community developers who are interested in improving the code and introducing new features, should they have the time. Having the code for the website, app, and extension available as open-source would be invaluable.

    Simkl has a full API for developers at https://api.simkl.com. Some of the Simkl projects are also available on github https://github.com/SIMKL in addition to other open source apps from other developers who utilise the API.

  11. Always show mouse-over tool-tip with show name on any graphisc poster

    Some lists do not include a show name beside the poster.
    Example: go to TV (or Anime) -> Premieres.
    The page shows horizontal rows of posters without any text, no show names. And posters are a graphic pictures, they may contain a show name, but often either a) the text is too small to read; b) text in the image is so distorted (in the name of the artist creativity) that it is impossible to understand, c) the poster is just an image without any show name at all.   12. More detailed watch history + being able to set a watch date.

    A major thing preventing me from using this site is that it doesn't have a watch history as detailed as Trakt. If I go into my history, I can see when I watched whatever to the minute.

    There's also the option to select "Other Date" when adding something, where I can input any time I want.

  13. Case insensitive sorting

    Sorting seems to be case sensitive, such that BEEF (https://simkl.com/tv/1576846/beef) is listed before The Bear (https://simkl.com/tv/1664094/the-bear)

    Wasn't sure if this should go under improvement or bug, decided on improvement since I don't know how sorting was decided on

  15. Make alphabetical sorting consistent between Profile and TV/Movie

    The way titles are sorted alphabetically is inconsistent between Profile and TV/Movie

    In profile all the titles that start with "The" are grouped together and alphabetically placed after S and before U. However in TV/Movie titles starting with "The" are sorted by what follows "The". The Bear is sorted as Bear, The. The Flash is sorted as Flash, The.

    Ideally this could be an option whether to group all of "The" titles together or sorted by what follows "The" but at least sorting them the same way between the two sections would be helpful

  17. Random button

    Not sure if this idea has been posted yet, but I couldn't find anything similar to it so here we go:
    What I would really love to see is a button that will give you a random movie, tv series or anime (depending on what you'd like to get) to watch, pretty much like a roulette. I have a lot of stuff to watch on my Plan to Watch list and yet I have trouble picking the next movie or tv series to watch. This would greatly help and add a little bit fun to it.
